2016 7th Monthly Tutorial

The 7th monthly tutorial was held at Hiyoshi campus, Keio University, on December 11th. 26 students participated the tutorial. After the invited lectures and hands-on exercises followed the presentation and discussion of the student projects. 

First, we had Assistant Professor Akihito Sudo, the University of Tokyo, introduce basics of machine learning which is the science of minimizing errors in statistical calculation algorithms. He introduced linear regression and gradient descent as fundamentals and practiced simple exercises for the students. He mentioned that machine learning is easy to use but unless the user has deep understanding of the method, there is risk in interpreting the final output. Next, we had Guo Zhiling, exchange student at the University of Tokyo, introduce programs and methods on “convolutional neural network.”

After the lectures, we had progress report from the students of their projects. To prepare for the final report meeting on February, faculties and students discussed budgets and recorded KPT (Keep, Problem, Try) factors of the research.
