Professor Ryosuke Shibasaki, The University of TokyoThe 1st Monthly Tutorial of fiscal year 2017 was held on April 16th at Hiyoshi Campus, Keio University. In total, there were 36 participants including studying abroad students from Indonesia, Netherlands, Zambia, Brazil and Mozambique. In the beginning, Professor Ryosuke Shibasaki, the University of Tokyo, introduced the consortium GESTISS and its activity. Followed was the explanation of the G-SPASE program and the overall schedule by Associate Professor Kohtake Naohiko, Keio University. Lectures on project design, system design, geo-spatial information technology, remote sensing, satellite positioning, GIS and big data were announced. From this year, we have decided to set themes for each Monthly Tutorials. The question for the 1st Monthly Tutorial was “Can Geo-spatial Information really solve Social Issues?”

According to the theme, we had 3 invited speakers. First, Takayoshi Fukuyo from the University of Tokyo spoke on his working and traveling experience in the government.

From the previous year, G-SPASE has adopted the idea of competency in its education program and have conducted competency evaluation survey among participants. In addition, we are developing an e-learning system which can handle online contents seamlessly. Therefore, we had Fabien Roudier from Institution for a Global Society give a lecture titled “360 Degrees Competency Analysis and Solution” and Researcher Akira Kodaka, Keio University, talk about “Learn & Share Assisting E-learning”, respectively.

In the latter part of the tutorial, 11 research projects were introduced by the students and a workshop was held to share individual goals among participants. After the tutorial, a party was held to welcome new students and wished for a prosperous year.
